The Železniki Museum (Ratitovec Public Institute) is located in the old part of Železniki, in a two-storey ironworker’s house from the first half of the 17th century, in the so-called Plavec House. In the museum, there is also tourist information centre with a sales gallery where you can buy the Železniki bobbin lace and other local handicraft products.

The ground floor displays the iron working section where the 600-year-old history of ironworks is presented. Every step of the process is put on display – from digging, transporting and melting of the iron ore to processing of the raw iron into semi-products and creating final products in the forge or spike forge. The processing plants, forge and spike forge, are presented with working models.

The first floor hosts the wood processing section and presents activities and crafts which developed as accompaniments to the iron working process. Collections of barrel-making, charcoal burning, sawmilling and of the production of “skrilj” roofing are also enriched with original tools and models.

Collections on the second floor present a more general history of the place: beginnings and development of bobbin lacemaking and various associations, the Liberation Front in the Selca Valley, transition of iron working to the metal industry and some compatriots.

On the square in front of the museum, you will find a blast furnace, smelting furnace for iron ore, the only preserved object from the era of iron working in the town and an important monument of technical heritage in Slovenia.
